Dear Discovery Families,
School will be closed on Monday, January 18th in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.
Our students will be celebrating Kindness Week by posting on Padlet words or actions of kindness:
- Tuesday Jan.19: Heroes of Kindness Day - Students post pictures of heroes who made a difference using kindness, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
- Wednesday Jan. 20: Garden of Kindness - Students will plant a flower, create a depiction of a flower, or find a picture of a flower
- Thursday Jan. 21: Words of Kindness - Explorers will post kind words to one another
- Friday Jan. 22: Examples of Kindness - Students will post examples of kind actions that they’ve seen or that can be done
We will host our SAC meeting on Tuesday, January 19th in the Media Center at 4:30 p.m. We will host our PTSA meeting at the conclusion of the SAC meeting.
On Wednesday, January 20th our school will participate in 30 minutes of research activities. Students complete these online, interactive activities individually on their school laptops, with a teacher available to support them. We will use the data from these activities to identify and support the social, emotional, academic, and physical needs of our students. Participation in Character Lab activities is voluntary, and families may choose to opt their child out of participating. If you would like for your child to opt-out of this exercise, please contact the main office.
Our students will receive instruction related to mental and emotional health, as required by the Florida Department of Education on Thursday, January 21st.
Also, on Thursday, Timber Creek will have a virtual parent night with questions and answers from 6:00 to 7:00 PM through the Microsoft Teams platform. A link will be posted on the TCHS website under the guidance tab and on the TCHS Facebook page.
Parents, you are invited to participate in the annual survey where you provide school leaders and teachers a view into the thinking and perceptions of our stakeholders. Careful analysis of the results enriches understanding of areas of strength and effectiveness as well as those areas that possibly need improvement. Please click on the following link to access the survey: bit.ly/ocpsfamily.
Thank you, Explorer Families, for your continued support of Discovery Middle as we “Prevail in Excellence.”
Sincerely,
Dr. Gloria E. Fernández

About Discovery Middle School
Celebrating more than 25 years of serving students and our community, Discovery Middle has a longstanding tradition of excellence. Recently recognized by the State of Florida as a "School of Excellence", Discovery Middle offers advanced courses for high school credit, a plethora of elective courses such as art, band, chorus, guitar, orchestra, foreign language, computer technology, STEM, and Latinos in Action. Student artwork has been recognized in local museums and art shows and have won numerous art competitions. Our band, chorus, and orchestra students have received superior ratings from All-County and All-State competitions. We offer computer courses where students have the opportunity to earn both high school credit and Microsoft industry certification. Students who participate in STEM are often found working on engineering projects that prepare them with real-world skills such as problem-solving, collaboration and decision-making while utilizing principles learned in their math and science courses. Our Latinos in Action partner with our neighboring school, Waterford Elementary to tutor students in reading and math. Simply put, Discovery Middle is a school of excellence and innovation.

Innovation School Plan
Discovery Middle is partnering with other stakeholders to integrate the arts into all content areas. According to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, arts integration is defined as, "an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both."
